In Memory of Melissa Cándida Doi

In Memory of Melissa C. Doi

Melissa Cándida Doi was 32 years old and from Throgs Neck, New York. (Born: Bronx, New York). Melissa worked as a manager at IQ Financial Systems on the 83rd floor in the South Tower of the World Trade Center.

When the first plane struck the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, Melissa was in a state of confusion. Originally, Melissa and her coworkers thought that it was a bomb that had gone off. After making their way down several flights of stairs, Melissa and her coworkers were told it was safe to go back up.

On the 44th floor the elevator opened and it was full and the only person to get on was Melissa. Melissa made her way back up the tower, not knowing the dangers she faced in doing so.

At 9.03am United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the southern facade of South Tower of the World Trade Center, impacting between the 77th and 85th floors.

Recording of part of the telephone call between Ms. Melissa Doi and operator Barnes

On that tragic morning, Melissa made a desperate 9-1-1 phone call from the 83rd floor of the South Tower. In it she is heard saying to the operator, "The floor is completely engulfed. We're on the floor, and we can't breathe, and it's very, very, very hot." Later Melissa says, "Can you stay on the line with me please? I feel like I'm dying."

The full call is 31 minutes long. After the first 4 minutes the operator can be heard as she tries to console Melissa, who apparently died while on the phone.

Her remains were found 3 years later.

I am French and I live in Paris France, I think before I had the idea to look on the the web what was written or exposed on this terrible day I was not really aware of the horror of this tragedy (Just like I suppose many of others french people)
All what I saw and continue to see about september 11, it was such an upset for me, I was shocked.
I use to live and work in Pittsburgh PA 25 yeras ago I remember all my american colleagues there, just like the people on this blog...
I hear again Melissa who said on her 911 phone call "I gonna died...I gonna died...."
May she rest in peace and god bless her and her family.

  2. My heart breaks when I first heard Melissa's urgent pleas. I wanted to to fly to NY and hire a fire fighting plane that could splash water into that building! I, like everyone else was so helpless in trying to help her and her colleagues from that awful burning building. May she rest in peace.

  3. Dear Melissa,

I never met you, but somehow I feel I know you. I wish I could have helped you that day. The pain in your voice goes right through my body and shakes me to my core. We share many of the same interests and I can tell you were a lovely, artistic, dynamic, beautiful soul. May you rest in peace. We will never, ever forget. God bless you.

  5. What I hear is a lazy operator who is not consoling Melissa. The operator's whole demeanor was not caring. How awful to treat someone like this in this situation.

    1. That is not what I heard. She (the operator) was trying to remain calm) I read that she actually contacted Melissa's mother that night to give her a message from her daughter. We are so quick to judge when no one has any idea how they would react to something so horrific! God Bless this lady who stayed on the line with Melissa even after she had passed.

  8. Missy,it has been 15 yrs since that awful day. I think of you often. This past week I have visited the 9/11 Monument several times to look at and touch your name, it is all I have left of you except for the memories of the times we played together as kids. I still cannot think of you without crying my heart out. Both mom (your godmother) and I miss you like crazy. We still love you so much, the love never dies. Rest peacefully in the arms of Father God.

  9. Your words on your 911 call was a true testament of your close loving relationship with your mom. Knowing her last wishes on Earth were to tell her mom she was the best mother in the world. How selfless and loving even in a moment of utter terror and despair.

  13. I´m very sorry Melissa. My heart cries out for you and everyone at the office. Yes, I would have jumped too with God´s Grace embracing me. I don't know if you jumped.
But I am sure in my heart that all of you are at peace right now. Some may have had re-incarnated by now. I believe in God and a second chance to re-born again.

In these past few days I have been reading about the WTC. Don´t know why. But perhaps my Guardian Angel wants me to know something, I dont know.
I´m Italian born. My heart goes out for all of them.
    R.I.P.
